In case you spotted Lionfish on one of our Keys menus and were wondering…

It’s #SustainableSunday and we’re asking #FloridaKeys visitors to consider ordering lionfish whenever it’s on the menu. Why? Lionfish is an invasive species and competes with native fish for food and habitat. Lionfish have a light, delicious flavor and can be savored in everything from sushi and ceviche to lusciously sauced dishes. It’s “conservation through consumption.” The REEF Reef Environmental Education Foundation has even published a lionfish cookbook! #ConnectAndProtect

If you accidentally hook a pelican, please do not get angry and yank at your line and hook. It will tear the pouch and the bird will die a slow death as it starves. Remember, pelicans do not know what hooks and line are. They simply see FISH!! Slowly reel the bird in, pausing if it’s head goes under water, then gently resume. When you can reach the bird, grab it by the bill and secure the wings to it’s body. Remove the hook and all the line before releasing the bird.
