Boaters Be on the Lookout- Sea Turtles may be basking (sunning themselves) at the water’s surface in the Florida Keys as water temperatures have dropped in recent weeks. This endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle was spotted just south of Big Pine Key in Hawks Channel on Sunday. (These aren’t super common around here and we’d like to thank those who helped identify it!)
Tuesday Tidbit- Did you know that these sea turtles were named after Richard Kemp, a Key West resident who was an avid naturalist and fisherman?

Please take care to only bring and use sunscreens that don’t incorporate the banned ingredients. Our reef is under great existential pressure from several sources and this is one aspect that we can control. If you visit a search engine and search on “reef-safe sunscreens,” you’ll see there’s a variety of options from many sellers.

The Key West City Commission on Tuesday voted 6-1 to ban the sale of sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, starting in 2021, in an effort to protect the only living coral reef in North America.
