“…the pictures did not fully do the property justice. The house was brighter and roomier than expected, the views of the Gulf were greater than 180 degrees, everything was immaculate, or as my wife put it “perfect”. And indeed everything was perfect for our week in paradise…we are very interested in renting the same property next year. This would mark the first time we have vacationed a second time in the same place in our 24 years of marriage.”

There are many kind of travelers, but most of us can be lumped into either the high-maintenance or the low-maintenance groups; it is good to know which one you are, particularly if you are high-maintenance. I am high-maintenance. I am the guy in the airport with the folder with the print outs and color coded itineraries done in Excel. I know going in, I need a lot of attention from whomever I am going to be working with. Surprises are for other people. The Middle Keys were hit particularly hard by Irma, so I decided that was where I wanted to stay, spend money and help the economy get back in stride. It was with this in mind that through internet searches I found Barbara McKee, and a house that I anticipated to be perfect for our seven-day getaway from the New England winter. A quick phone call with Ms. McKee, we identified the house I was interested in was available for the dates I was traveling, the rental contract was in my email box in less than four hours, and the signed rental agreement and deposit check in the mail within 48 hours. All smooth, no bumps. No bumps until I received notification that due to the hurricane damage the property I had thought I was to rent would not be prepared in time. For a traveler like me, this is the kind of surprise I seek to avoid. I understand it, given the circumstances, but not a comfortable feeling. Ms. McKee immediately asked if I would like a refund, I did not, I had already booked non-refundable airline tickets, reserved the perfect car and all those fun things. So Ms. McKee, not the one panicked at this moment, responded with 4 different properties that were available in the same price range. We found another one to our liking and shared our choice. Next morning; new rental agreement in the e-mail, signed, scanned and returned. Done, easy, same town, similar amenities, similar price. I, of course, was still nervous, there were specific reasons I selected the initial property. Ms. McKee assured me that the new property we selected was very nice, of high quality and talked me off the ledge. Calming me down is not a rental agent’s job, but she did. The photos of the new property were very nice; an updated modern feel to the house, the pool, spa and ocean front property that we were seeking. Everything was a go. Then we arrived, the pictures did not fully do the property justice. The house was brighter and roomier than expected, the views of the Gulf were greater than 180 degrees, everything was immaculate, or as my wife put it “perfect”. And indeed everything was perfect for our week in paradise. I do not want to get into the details of the house right now, other than to say, we are very interested in renting the same property next year. This would mark the first time we have vacationed a second time in the same place in our 24 years of marriage. Perhaps once that is booked, I will review the property itself, in the interim I will just say that it was breathtaking each and every day. Picking up the keys upon arrival; no hassle. Dropping off the keys, no hassle. Communication from the time I made the initial reservation with Barbara McKee, prompt, accurate, concise every time. Whether it was a problem with the house, or a mistake on my part that needed to be worked out. I would recommend anyone looking to rent a home in the Florida Keys to make their first call to Barbara McKee.
